How long does it take to prepare for KNM in 2026?

· By Maksim · 2 min read

Hi, I'm Maksim 👋 KNM is a very different exam from Reading, Listening, Writing, or Speaking. It is not only about Dutch language skills — it is also about knowing specific topics.

I'm writing this article because I first prepared in a way that gave me too much confidence, and only later realized I needed a better structure 😅

How long KNM preparation took me 🇳🇱

For me, KNM preparation took around 3 weeks.

I think it is possible to shorten it to 2 weeks if you prepare across a wide range of topics and materials, and if you test yourself properly on DutchExam.

My problem was that I first prepared with ChatGPT, and it gave me unreasonable confidence. The questions were too easy, so I thought I was more ready than I actually was.

When I started feeling ready ✅

I was not completely sure that I was ready.

But I went through tests across all topics and understood my weak areas. That helped me feel more realistic about the exam.

For KNM, I think it is important not only to study, but also to know which topics still create mistakes for you.

What preparation rhythm worked best 📚

The best rhythm for me was a little bit every day.

Also, booking the exam 3 weeks in advance helped my brain understand that I really needed to prepare. Without a date, it was much harder to force myself to study.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to prepare for the KNM exam?

For Maksim, around 3 weeks — potentially closer to 2 weeks with a wide range of topics and materials and proper self-testing, rather than relying on one easy source.

Is ChatGPT enough to prepare for KNM?

Not on its own — it gave Maksim unreasonable confidence because its questions were too easy, which masked real weak spots until he tested with proper exam-style materials.

What preparation rhythm works best for KNM?

A little bit every day, combined with booking the exam a few weeks in advance — having a real date on the calendar made daily preparation feel necessary rather than optional.
