The best way to prepare for the Writing inburgering exam in 2026

Hi, I'm Maksim 👋 Writing was one of the exams where I understood that 'just knowing Dutch' is not enough.
You need to write yourself, check yourself, and understand the exam criteria. That's why I'm writing this article — to share the preparation method that would save me time if I had to do it again.

The fastest improvement came from writing texts myself and asking ChatGPT to check them using specific exam criteria.
This part is important: without clear criteria, AI was too kind to me and gave an unrealistic evaluation 😅
So I used the exam description as a base for feedback. Then I tracked the types of mistakes I repeated again and again.
How I fixed repeated mistakes 📚
When I noticed a repeated mistake, I did not just read the correction and move on.
I tried to solve more exercises around that exact mistake until it started disappearing from my writing.
For me, this was much better than randomly writing more texts without understanding what exactly I needed to improve.
What I would do differently ✅
If I prepared again, I would take 2–3 lessons with a personal teacher:
This would save money on lessons and shorten the preparation time. For the rest of the time, I would solve as many Writing tasks as possible on DutchExam, because the tasks there are built around the exam criteria.
- First lesson — diagnosis of my current level.
- Second lesson — check progress in the middle of preparation.
- Third lesson — final check one day before the exam.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to prepare for the Writing inburgering exam?
Write texts yourself, get feedback based on the actual exam criteria (not just generic AI praise), fix repeated mistakes with targeted exercises, and add a few teacher sessions for diagnosis and final correction.
Is AI feedback reliable for Writing preparation?
Only if you give it clear exam criteria to check against — without that, AI tends to be too kind and gives an unrealistically positive evaluation.
How many teacher lessons are enough for Writing?
Around 2–3 lessons: one to diagnose your current level, one to check progress mid-preparation, and one final check shortly before the exam.
