How long does it take to prepare for the Writing exam in 2026?
· By Maksim · 2 min read
Hi, I'm Maksim 👋 Writing was one of the harder exams for me because it is very easy to avoid real writing practice.
You can ask AI to generate texts. You can read examples. But at the end, during the exam, you need to write yourself.
That's why I'm writing this article — because Writing preparation should train your own writing, not someone else's writing 😅

For me, Writing preparation took about 3 weeks.
It was difficult because during my learning process, I wrote too little by myself. That was a problem.
AI should check your text, not generate everything for you. If AI writes instead of you, your own skill does not grow enough.
What I did during intense preparation 📚
During intense preparation, I analyzed my mistakes.
Then, for each repeated mistake, I looked for 10–15 separate exercises to fix it. This helped me not only notice the mistake, but actually remove it from my writing.
When I knew I was ready ✅
I felt ready when the full cycle became fast and automatic:
I also needed sentence building to become more automatic, with verbs and prepositions already available in my head.
- First, read the task.
- Then write a draft.
- Then check your mistakes.
- Finally, rewrite the final answer.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to prepare for the Writing exam?
For Maksim, about 3 weeks — longer than Reading or Listening, mainly because it's easy to under-practice actual writing and rely on AI-generated text instead.
Should AI write your Writing exam practice texts for you?
No — AI should check your text, not generate it. If AI writes instead of you, your own writing skill doesn't grow enough for the real exam.
How do you know when you're ready for the Writing exam?
When the full cycle — read the task, write a draft, check mistakes, rewrite the final answer — becomes fast and automatic, with common sentence structures and vocabulary already available in your head.
