What you need to know to pass the inburgering Writing exam in 2026

Hi, I'm Maksim 👋 Writing was a separate skill for me. Even if you can read, listen, or speak a bit, writing still needs its own practice.

I'm writing this article because I realized that for Writing, it is not enough to 'know Dutch.' You need to know what to write, how to write it, and how to avoid simple mistakes under exam pressure 😅

What helped me most for Writing ✍️

For me, grammar was very important.

One simple thing I focused on was using "want" instead of "omdat" when I wanted to keep sentences easier and safer.

I also needed to expand my vocabulary to around 1000 A2 words, especially verbs and prepositions. These are small things, but they make a big difference when you need to build sentences quickly.

The most important Writing skills ✅

The most important skill was not writing long texts.

Actually, I think it is better to follow the exam format and write only what is needed. Do not write more than the minimum if it increases the risk of mistakes.

For me, passing Writing is about clear, correct, simple sentences.

What I would review before the exam 📚

Right before the Writing exam, I would review grammar.

I would focus on the sentence structures I can use confidently, instead of trying to learn something completely new at the last moment.
